For this blog post, I am discussing two outbreaks of intestinal pathogens which occurred in 2019. The two outbreaks are an outbreak of Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) in Sweden, and an outbreak of Campylobacter jejuni in the United States. I will discuss many aspects of each of the diseases, including the groups most affected by these diseases, the organism’s morphology, and signs and symptoms of the disease. I will also discuss the reservoir for the organism and how it spreads, virulence factors for each organism and what the treatment usually is.
The outbreak of Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) in Sweden in 2019 caused 130 cases. This was notable because it was the largest outbreak of the disease in Sweden in 2019. The article doesn’t say if the origin of the outbreak was ever found. There were no reported fatalities.
