Two factors influenced me to click on this outbreak update page from the CDC** on a salmonella outbreak largely in California. The strain of this outbreak was from Salmonellaenterica serotype Stanley. A serotype is a specific subtype of the species Salmonella enterica. It was linked to the -in my opinion- fabulously named “dried wood ear mushrooms.” Both of those names combined are great catalysts for a good story about an outbreak. The number of cases in this outbreak totaled fifty-five; thirty three from California and the rest from nine other states. Humans from age 2 to 74 reported illness and out of 35 cases that provided medical information, only 4 required hospitalization.
