Organ Donation: Opt-in vs Opt-out

The UK has recently changed from using an opt-in system to the current soft opt-out system. We’ll cover what this change in system means and how it will affect your decisions to donate.

What are the pros and cons of the two methods?

The two categories of organ donation policies involve the patient either opting in and choosing to donate an organ or the opting out where the patients’ organs will be donated unless they specify for them not to.

The opt-in system must have the patient sign off allowing for their organs to be donated before their death. An argument against it is that this can lead to false negatives where someone who wanted to donate would be unable to due to them not signing up.
