Group 2 – Here we come!

I emailed Prof. Bennett about an idea I had coming into this course. I’m a volunteer co-leader of the Asperger Syndrome/Non-Verbal Learning Disorder (AS/NLD) Parent Support Group. One of our challenges is providing new parents with resources they need to begin setting up public services for their autistic child as they approach adulthood. The learning curve is steep and overwhelming. And rehashing these topics at every meeting becomes very repetitive for parents who’ve been attending for awhile. How can we make learning about the process of obtaining public services for autistic adults more accessible?

Our AS/NLD Parent Support Group already has an amazing presentation on The 5 Pillars of Support, but the information is very dense – too dense to put into a website (Regional Center, Department of Rehabilitation (DOR), Social Security benefits (SSI), ABLE Savings/Investment Accounts, and Special Needs Trusts).
