My mum heard a radio interview with a woman in whose husband had Asperger’s Syndrome and alot of the it resonated really strongly with her. So after alot of further research, she brought the topic to my dad.
He like a lot of people on the spectrum initially didn’t take the idea too well. It was a lot to process and I’m sure like many other he already had a vague idea of what autism was and what it means but felt alot of those stereotypes didn’t apply to him. (lack of emotions, lacking in empathy, and unable to make eye contact)
So in an ironically very autistic way he looked at the list of common traits and tendencies and despite fitting the majority of them. He didn’t fit all of them so couldn’t possibly be on the spectrum.
